New Year festivities start on the first day of the lunar month and continue until the 15th, when the moon is brightest. The first week is celebrated with visits to friends and family following special traditions designed to bring good luck. The second week ends with the Lantern festival on the evening of the 15th day of the lunar month.

The year of the Pig

The Chinese Zodiac has a 12 year cycle and each year is named after a different animal. According to legend, the year of a person's birth is the primary factor in determining that person's personality traits, physical and mental attributes and degree of success and happiness throughout his lifetime. People born in that year will become that animal, taking on its characteristics and identifying with it for their entire lives.
